Barely a month after taking to the podium at the Youth World Sailing Championships, Ireland’s Sienna Wright has won the Under 17 world title as well as the overall silver medal in her ILCA6 class this weekend (Buenos Aires, Argentina Friday 19th January 2024).
The Howth sailor delivered a highly consistent 12-race series in which she took three bullets and featured in the top six leading boats for most of the event.
Italy’s Maria Vittoria Arseni took Gold though Wright’s result at age just 15 underlines her potential over the coming years at youth level where she can be expected to further consolidate her performance in preparation for a senior career option towards the Los Angeles Olympics.
In preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, all three disciplines within Irish Sailing’s programme have qualified for the Marseilles regatta in late July with selection trials in two events starting soon.
Only in the ILCA6 class – the women’s single-handed event at the Olympics – where Wright’s clubmate Eve McMahon has qualified as the sole contender will there be a straight nomination to the Olympic Federation of Ireland for team inclusion.
